Program Management

Systems Engineering

A good systems engineering and systems management process are strategic element in successfully managing technically challenging projects. Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary approach and means for enabling the realization and deployment of successful systems. It can be viewed as the application of engineering techniques to the engineering of systems, as well as the application of a systems approach to engineering efforts. Systems engineering considers both the business and the technical needs of all customers, with the goal of providing a quality product that meets the user needs. Systems engineering integrates other disciplines and specialty groups into a team effort, forming a structured development process that proceeds from concept to production to operation and disposal.

Systems engineering is the overarching process that a team applies to transition from a stated capability need to an operationally effective and suitable system. Systems engineering applies the systems engineering processes across the acquisition life cycle (adapted to each and every phase) and is the integrating mechanism for balanced solutions addressing capability needs, design considerations and constraints, as well as limitations imposed by technology, budget, and schedule. Balanced system solutions are best achieved by applying established systems engineering processes to the planning, development, and implementation of a system or system-of-systems acquisition in an Integrated Product and Process Development framework.
